How to Winterize a Floating Dock to Prevent Damage
How to Winterize a Floating Dock to Prevent Damage
When the temperature drops and the water begins to freeze, the question always rises: can your Candock stay in the water all throughout winter?
The short answer is yes — but not always.
It depends on your environment, the ice conditions, and how you prepare your installation before the cold sets in.
Even though Candock’s modular systems are built to handle extreme temperatures, taking the time to winterize your dock properly will help you avoid damage and ensure it’s ready to perform as soon as spring arrives.
From assessing your site to choosing the right storage method, here’s how to protect your floating dock from winter’s toughest challenges.
1. Evaluate Your Environment
Before deciding what to do with your dock, take a good look at your surroundings.
If your body of water tends to have ice movement — caused by wind, currents, or fluctuating temperatures — we recommend removing and storing your dock on land for the winter.

If, however, the ice remains stable and immobile, you can safely leave your Candock in the water throughout the cold season.
Good to know: The main risk comes from shifting or expanding ice, which can exert immense pressure on any structure — even a modular one.
Also, keep in mind that water expansion inside the cubes can cause damage if they’re left partially filled during freezing temperatures. If your installation includes cubes that have been filled with water — for example, to create a slope or for specific applications — we recommend either storing those cubes indoors or emptying them completely before winter.
2. Remove Accessories and Clean the Surface
Before winter arrives, take a few minutes to remove accessories such as ladders, benches, fenders, or cleats. This makes handling easier and prevents premature wear.
Then, clean your dock with fresh water to remove debris, algae, or salt buildup — especially in saltwater environments. A quick rinse before storage will help keep it in perfect shape for spring.

3. Choose the Right Storage Method
If you decide to remove your dock for the winter, we recommend storing it outdoors on a mostly flat surface to protect the structure.

Many Candock users choose to partially dismantle their system for easier handling. Others keep their dock assembled and simply drag it onto the shore using rollers or a winch. Both methods are suitable!
Bonus tip: For marinas and large installations, using a forklift or lifting straps can make the operation quick and safe.
4. Inspect and Plan Ahead
Winter is also the perfect time to perform a complete inspection of your dock and anchoring system.
Look for signs of wear, missing connectors, or damaged accessories — and take a moment to check that your chains, poles, and cables are in good condition. These components can wear down over time due to friction or corrosion, and replacing them before spring ensures a stable and safe installation.
Take note of any parts that need replacement, and plan your orders early so you’re ready when the season starts again. Also, if you’re considering an upgrade or expansion, your Candock distributor can help you plan everything ahead of time.
Winter-Resistant by Design
Made from high-quality HDPE, Candock cubes are built to withstand extreme temperatures without cracking, rusting, or warping. Unlike wood or metal docks, they require minimal maintenance — but winter preparation is still key to ensuring longevity.

By taking a few preventive steps before the first frost, you’ll protect your investment and make spring setup a breeze.
A well-winterized Candock system not only withstands the season: it comes back ready for another year of reliable performance.
