Customer Spotlight: How Marina Park Uses Candock Floating Docks for Sailing and Community Programs
At Marina Park in Newport Beach, California, the waterfront is more than a beautiful setting—it’s where people learn to sail, spend time with family, and connect with their community.
Operated by the City of Newport Beach, Marina Park is a community and sailing center offering a wide range of programs for sailors of all ages, ability and experience levels. From beginner and intermediate sailing to family sailing, dinghy instruction, keelboat, and adaptive sailing classes, the facility stays active throughout the year.
Supporting all of that activity is infrastructure designed to make life on the water easier.
One important part of that infrastructure is Marina Park’s Candock modular floating dock system.
A Floating Dock Designed for Everyday Sailing Activities
At a busy sailing center, a floating dock needs to do more than provide access to boats.
At Marina Park, the Candock floating dock system provides practical working space for instructors, staff, and sailors throughout the sailing program.
One of its everyday uses is rolling up the sails.
After sailing classes, students remove the sails from the keelboats and bring them onto the open areas of the Candock system. The spacious floating dock provides a convenient surface for folding and rolling sails.
The Candock system also provides a stable surface for instruction of classes, and dinghies are easily hauled onto the cubes for easy storage.
After more than 10 years in service, the Candock system at Marina Park remains in great shape and continues to support the sailing program's day-to-day activities. Its modular floating docks can be easily rinsed and cleaned, allowing the Marina Park team to keep these working areas ready for the next class.
It may seem like a small detail, but at a busy sailing facility, these practical features make a difference.
The dock becomes more than a way to get on and off a boat. It becomes part of the daily workflow that keeps sailing programs running smoothly.
Supporting Sailing and Community Programs in Newport Beach
Marina Park plays an important role in making sailing and boating accessible to the Newport Beach community.
The City of Newport Beach operates the facility as a community and sailing center, offering programs for a variety of ages and experience levels. Activities include sailing for beginners and intermediate sailors, family sailing, dinghy and keelboat instruction, and summer sailing camps. The facility also works with the OCC School of Sailing & Seamanship to provide additional sailing opportunities at Marina Park.
With so many people using the waterfront, dependable marina infrastructure is essential.
A well-designed floating dock system helps create a practical environment where instructors can teach, students can learn, and families and community members can spend more time on the water.
For Marina Park, the goal isn't simply to provide a marina. It is to create a place where the community can experience and enjoy sailing.
Built to Handle Real-World Marina Conditions
Southern California is known for its favorable weather, but waterfront facilities still have to deal with changing conditions.
According to the Marina Park sailing program coordinator, Santa Ana wind events can bring gusts of approximately 40 knots.
Despite these conditions, the Marina Park team reports that the Candock system has continued to perform reliably.
After years of use, the team expects the existing docks to continue serving the facility for another decade or longer.
For a municipal sailing facility, long-term durability is an important consideration. Infrastructure needs to withstand regular use while remaining practical for staff, instructors, and the people who use the facility every day.
A Floating Dock System That Works for Staff and Sailors
When Marina Park reconfigured its Candock dock system, the team also gathered feedback on the new configuration.
The response was positive.
The system works well for both staff and sailors, and the sailing program has not received negative feedback about the docks.
That kind of response can be particularly valuable in a busy public facility.
When dock infrastructure is doing its job, it should support the activities taking place on the water—not create additional challenges for the people using it.
Marina Park Is Expanding Its Candock Floating Dock System
Perhaps one of the clearest indications of Marina Park’s experience with the system is what the team is doing next.
They're ordering more Candock docks.
Expanding the system allows the sailing center to continue developing its waterfront operations and supporting its growing range of programs.
For a community sailing center, investing in a modular floating dock system offers flexibility as needs change.
Candock’s modular design allows floating dock configurations to be adapted and expanded over time, making it a practical solution for marinas, sailing centers, yacht clubs, waterfront parks, and other marine applications.
Working With Candock West Coast
We'd also like to recognize Candock West Coast, the distributor who supplied the system to Marina Park.
Local knowledge and support can be an important part of selecting the right floating dock solution. Candock West Coast helped bring the Candock system to Marina Park, where it continues to support sailing programs and day-to-day waterfront activities.
We're proud to see Candock floating docks playing a practical role at such an important community waterfront facility.
Beyond the Marina
One of the things that has surprised us is just how many ways the Candock system can be repurposed around the harbor.
The Harbor Department has a remotely controlled cleaning robot that cruises the Bay, collecting floating garbage. Because the harbor is so large, they wanted a way to safely dock the robot at other marinas around the Bay. Their solution was to repurpose some of our older Candocks and create a small floating docking platform that can be towed to different locations.
And that's just one example.
We've also had contractors use Candocks as temporary work platforms for projects on the water. In one case, a crew needed to work underneath a dock gangway, so they borrowed several cubes to create a safe, stable working platform beneath the structure.
It's been great to see the Candock system being used in ways we never originally imagined. From supporting harbor-cleaning equipment to providing work platforms for contractors,
there are many ways to repurpose the system around the waterfront.
